UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST (UCC) EXPLORES EDUCATIONAL COLLABORATION WITH INDONESIAN UNIVERSITIES

    Friday, 16th June, 2023

Ghana’s number one tertiary institution for the 2022/2023 academic year, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in the Central Region has begun exploring various educational opportunities and collaborative programmes available in the Republic of Indonesia for the benefit of its students, lecturers and faculties. The move, which among other things, would also cover the Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics (STEM) space, would give a further boost to several courses including Engineering, Science, Technology and Humanity programmes being offered at the university.

The Pro Vice Chancellor of UCC, Professor Mrs. Rosemond Boohene has, to this end, held detailed and fruitful discussions with the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Indonesia in Ghana, H.E. Paskal A. B. Rois during a courtesy call on him at his office in Accra. The two-hour meeting afforded the two leaders the opportunity to share various educational and other opportunities with each other which would inure to the benefit of both countries and particularly Ghanaians.

According to Professor Mrs. Boohene, UCC was looking at collaborative areas such as short term training, full staff and students’ exchange programmes as well as scholarship opportunities for faculty and students in Indonesian universities in all study fields. She intimated that UCC was also seeking to increase its staff strength by building their capacities through the pursuant of Masters and Philosophy Degrees (PhD) programmes by faculty and students, adding that the move would enable the university to develop and strengthen its career areas like Pharmacy, Engineering and the Arts.

The Pro Vice Chancellor told the Honorary Consul that UCC was not only a top-notch university in Ghana but also across Africa. According to her, UCC was ranked in the 2022/2023 academic year as the number one university in Ghana and in the West African sub-region. ‘It was also the fourth in Africa and one of the best globally’, Professor Mrs. Boohene added.

She informed Mr. Rois that UCC would want to leverage on this huge institutional reputation to partner with tertiary institutions in Indonesia in order to continue to churn out quality students from Ghana for the world at large.

The Honorary Consul, Mr. A. B. Rois lauded the Pro Vice Chancellor of UCC and indeed the management of the University for its success so far chalked and the continuous efforts to sustain the gains UCC had made over the decades. He was also grateful to the Pro Vice Chancellor for the visit and hoped that the proposed educational collaboration between UCC and their counterparts in Indonesia, would open another great chapter in the relationship between Ghana and Indonesia, adding that Cape Coast had always been on the Indonesian map because of the two countries’ political history and independence struggle in the days which had culminated in the identification of a spot called Jarbar in the Cape Coast castle till date.

Mr. Rois used the opportunity to discuss the various educational opportunities that Indonesian universities and the Republic of Indonesia for that matter, could offer UCC as being requested, assuring that the collaboration was highly possible for the promotion and advancement of education in the two countries. According to him, the Indonesian universities provided all manner of educational programmes and opportunities ranging from Humanities, Technology and the Sciences to Agriculture, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Pharmacy, Tourism and Engineering amongst others for undergraduate, Masters and Philosophy Degree (PhD) students from across the world.

The Honorary Consul informed the Pro Vice Chancellor of UCC of the existence of the KNB Scholarship Scheme by the Republic of Indonesia which both faculty and students of UCC could take advantage of to better their lot including their academic laurels. According to him, the scholarship, which had been in existence since 1992, had so far benefited more than thirty (30) students, adding that the numbers were still counting with four more student applicants expected to leave the shores of Ghana in January, 2024 for Jakarta to pursue various fully-funded courses in various universities in Indonesia. He disclosed that those eligible should meet an age requirement in addition to an Average Grade Point of 3.25 or above.

He was hopeful that this initial meeting would afford some UCC students the opportunity to equally join the scholarship family when the next window was opened in January, next year. ‘There is also the partial scholarship where the government of Indonesia bears the full tuition cost with the student paying for the living costs’, Mr. Rois added, disclosing that more than fifteen students from Ghana were currently pursuing various educational programmes under the partial scholarship package.

Mr. Rois informed Professor Mrs.  Boohene that, Indonesian with its population of more than 270 million people and her status as a member of the G-20 group, produced almost everything the country consumed and used, ranging from food, equipment, fertilizers, clothing, military hardware and ammunition to textiles, detergents and soaps as well as pharmaceuticals to aircrafts amongst others. According to him, Indonesia did not only manufacture its products in line with the European standards but also exported same to several countries across the globe. He cited one government garment factory for instance in Indonesia, PT Sritex that had a workforce of 50,000 people, emphasizing that Ghana could learn a lot of technology from Indonesia.

The Honorary Consul disclosed that his outfit was working around the clock to get an Indonesian Pharmaceutical Company to partner with a Ghanaian firm to produce all the childhood vaccines needed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) for use by children. He also announced the establishment of what he described as the Indonesia African Trade Mission with a vision to helping African business firms and companies to collaborate with their counterparts in Indonesia for partnership in any discipline including education in order to move the African continent and trade to a higher level.

Mr. A. B. Rois thanked the Pro Vice Chancellor for the working visit and assured her of his support as well as that of the Embassy in Abuja and the Republic of Indonesia in making this dream a reality within the shortest space of time. He also assured Professor Mrs. Rosemond Boohene of his readiness to interact with the students at a later date in order to share more thoughts, ideas and opportunities directly with them.

The Pro Vice Chancellor noted that most of the universities in Ghana and Africa were currently also looking out for entrepreneurship programmes for their students so as not only to churn out students looking for jobs but also job creators themselves with the skills and knowledge they would have acquired from the university. According to her, UCC was using its Design Thinking and Innovation Hub and the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise Development to nurture its students to grow business ideas in order to become employable themselves.

  • GHANA’S ONLY WAY OUT- LEARNING FROM INDONESIA

GHANA’S ONLY WAY OUT- LEARNING FROM INDONESIA

Indonesia Honorary Consul to Ghana, His Excellency Paskal Rois has opined that Ghana and Africa will grow and the economy will be better if they learn from the story of Indonesia.

Speaking in a one on one interview with Blogger Attractive Mustapha Nii Okai Inusah at a time everyone is lamenting in Ghana about hardship, he said that Indonesia used to export raw materials but now they have decided not to export raw materials anymore.

He revealed that Indonesians are rather majoring in the processing field where they manufacture almost everything themselves and ship the finished products by adding value.

“When you export raw materials to Europe and other advanced countries you don’t add value and they buy at any price they want but when you export finished products there’s high value attached” he said.

He explained further that for instance Indonesia used to supply lithium to advanced countries for the production of batteries which made them the major suppliers but later decided to manufacture their own batteries.

“ As we speak they manufacture everything they use and they are doing very well so if Ghana can learn from their story that will be very good”.

Consul Paskal Rois believes it is time for Africa to focus on Indonesia as the hope of Africa because Africans have given enough opportunities to the Europeans and the Americans but yet the impacts have not been felt so it is time for Ghana and other African countries to deepen their relationship with Indonesia.

The Honorary Consul of the Republic of Indonesia in Ghana, H.E. Paskal A. B. Rois has paid a courtesy call on the British High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Harriet Thompson at her residence in Accra.

The visit was aimed among other things not only at deepening the bond of friendship and diplomatic ties between Ghana, Indonesia and Great Britain but also promoting tourism and bi-lateral trade within the Ghanaian space. Both leaders also shared a lot of opportunities that are available to the three countries for exploration.

    H.E. Harriet Thompson and H.E. Paskal A. B. Rois

The Indonesian Consul informed Madam Thompson that Ghana has over the years improved and increased her trade with Indonesia which has a population of more than 270 million people. According to him, more Ghanaians are getting to know about Indonesia and her potentials which can be found in areas such as agriculture, mining and petroleum, commerce, industry, tourism and trade. Honoraray Consul Rois noted that a number of Indonesian companies are working in Ghana, producing popular food and other items such as Indomi Noodles, Viking Cooking Oil, Soklin, Medisoft and other soaps and detergents as well as Santex hand wash or sanitizers amongst others.

Sharing with the British High Commissioner some of his success stories since assuming office some one year ago, the Indonesian Honorary Consul to Ghana said he has been able to initiate the Indonesia-Africa Trade Mission which is aimed at deepening bi-lateral trade and relationship between the peoples of the African continent and Indonesia thereby increasing trade between Ghanaians as well as Indonesians and Africans.

According to the Honorary Consul, these programmes are partially funded by the Indonesian government, adding that five (5) of such beneficiaries left Ghana in July, 2022 for Indonesia to defend their project or thesis with the remaining five (5) also preparing to do same later. As part of this scholarship requirement, the beneficiaries took care of their feeding among others while the Indonesian government bore the full cost of tuition and its related expenses.

Cultural exchange programmes are also on-going between the two states so as to explore larger areas of co-operation for the benefit of the two countries. The move, the Honorary Consul noted has wept the appetite of many Ghanaians who are now willing and ever ready to visit and learn more about the culture of Indonesia.

Because most of these supplies from overseas are from the United Kingdom, the Honorary Consul used the opportunity to appeal to the High Commissioner to assist ROIS Limited and other companies in the oil and gas industry to partner and deepen trade relationship with British companies operating in the oil and gas space for collaborations.

Mr. Rois noted that Indonesia produces one of the best vegetable oils in the world, adding that the country can also boast of clothing and batik potentials. He explained that while Ghana is doing well in African batik, the country could do better if she learns more from other best practices around the world particularly the expertise in Indonesia. Mr. Rois made the pledge to facilitate any of such moves between the two countries.

The British High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Harriet Thompson congratulated Mr. Paskal A.B. According to her, Ghana is a peaceful and beautiful place to live in, adding that the features of Ghana’s hospitality are worthy of emulation by many countries. She was of the view that her tour of the country including the recent one to the Volta Region attests to these facts.

H.E. Harriet Thompson – BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER TO GHANA

Madam Thompson was also excited about the intention of ROIS Limited and other companies to partner their British company contemporaries in the oil and gas sector and pledged her readiness to link ROIS Ltd to the Trade Department within the United Kingdom (UK) Embassy to assist as soon as possible in the realization of such a laudable business partnership objective in the UK.

Touching on education in Great Britain in relation to that in the developing world, Ms. Thompson noted that the UK has a strong educational system that can be emulated by all and sundry including many Ghanaians, Indonesians and other citizens for their benefit.

INDONESIA RELAXES COVID-19 NOSE MASK WEARING AND FOREIGN TRAVELLER RESTRICTIONS

The President of Indonesia, H.E Joko Widodo has removed Covid-19 testing requirements for fully-vaccinated overseas travelers to the country. This follows an improvement in the Covid-19 situation in the world’s fourth-most populous country with a population of more than 270 million inhabitants.

Wearing of nose masks outdoors has also become optional except for crowded outdoor areas, indoor activities and on public transport.

Announcing the latest relaxed restrictions on the pandemic in Jakarta on Tuesday, President Widodo added that the elderly, those having underlying health conditions or exhibiting symptoms of a cold, are encouraged to still wear face masks.

The decision comes after neighbouring Singapore ended most of its Covid-19 virus curbs with Malaysia also relaxing its mask mandate.

Indonesia will keep its remaining virus restrictions until May 23 when the government would evaluate whether the rules are still needed. Covid-19 cases in the world’s fourth-most populous nation have been easing, even reaching this year’s low in early May, as death tolls also fall drastically.

Confirming the announcement in an interview in Accra with our newsteam, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Indonesia in Ghana, H.E. Paskal A.B.Rois said the relaxed restrictions as announced by the President of Indonesia, were very welcoming. Mr. Rois was of the view that the relaxed protocols would enable such prospective visitors and the business community in Ghana to visit Jakarta in order to pursue their business, tourism and other dreams.

The Honorary Consul touched on the tourism potentials of Indonesia, saying it consists of over 17,000 islands including Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and parts of Borneo and New Guinea. According to him, there are tourist areas such as Bali and its forest seaside resort of Kuta. Bali, with its beautiful island beaches, is arguably Indonesia’s most popular vacation spot which has a number of cultural landmarks and traditions that make any visit to that site worthwhile, the Honorary Consul emphasized.

Consul Paskal A.B. Rois emphasized that the Republic of Indonesia re-opened the country for international tourists since 12th January, 2022 and encouraged all Ghanaians to take advantage of the latest relaxed Covid-19 restrictions to visit Indonesia.

He gave the assurance that the Consulate is ready to assist anyone to acquire the necessary documents including Visa to travel to Indonesia for business ventures and other purposes. According to him, his outfit would also assist any first-time visitor to Indonesia to get to any destination of his or her choice within the Republic of Indonesia, emphasizing, ‘it is opened and now easier for people to travel to Indonesia’.

Indonesia recorded a total of four million tourists in 2020. In 2021, there were about 1.56 million international visitor arrivals in Indonesia. The number significantly decreased in comparison to the previous year’s due to the Covid-19 travel restrictions.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Abuja with accreditation to Ghana, Dr Usra Hendra Harahap has stressed the need for Ghana and Indonesia to boost the volume of trade between each other. According to him, the two sister countries can take advantage of the long standing bi-lateral ties between them since the establishment of the beginning of diplomatic relations in 1959.

The Indonesian Honorary Consulate in Ghana has implored businesses to take advantage of the numerous business opportunities in Indonesia.

According to His Excellency Paskal Rois, the business community in Indonesia is seeking investment partners with a special interest in Ghana.
